Environpest are a family owned pest control company based in Brisbane, Australia. Environpest is owned by Mark Porter, who has over 31 years experience in the pest control and fumigation industry.

Mark was employed to the mid 80's by Antipest Australia Pty Ltd (a division of Elders/IXL) through Elders bigger years. At that time Elders had substantial interests in the beef industry in Australia, and had branches in all the major country towns. Elders had abattoirs West of Toowoomba, and in Cairns and Townsville. They added a feedlot at Mungindi, approximately 100 miles west south west of Goondiwindi. At this time, Elders also bought Carlton United Breweries, and Antipest had some 300 hotels throughout Queensland to inspect for termites, and treat as necessary. In Australia, we have northern and southern groups of termites (loosely separated by the Tropic of Capricorn). Both groups work differently, depending on whether they're in moist coastal condition, or dry arid conditions. Through the Antipest experience, Mark was able to work with all 4 groupss of termites. It really was experience you just couldn't buy. In July, 1985, Elders sold Antipest to Rentokil, and Mark worked with Rentokil for some four months before leaving.

The following years provided great experience in termite inspections and treatments, fumigation, and commercial pest control. Fumigation and pest control works were mainly for the food industry. Environpest were DPI - Forestry fumigators for the West Indian Drywood termite fumigating some 60 buildings in Brisbane, Bundaberg and Thursday Island.

Quarantine fumigation and treatments became a big part of our business, and to this day Mark is still an AQIS (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service) registered stakeholder.

In the late 1990's a disturbing trend of premature termite failures was emerging. It was common knowledge from as early as the early 1980's in our industry that the pest control companies doing the majority of the under slab spraying for the builders for less than the chemical cost of Australian Standard compliant treatment. With the transition to the newer chemicals in July, 1995, it soon became obvious that these premature failures were fast becoming the norm.

Mark became involved with a group known as the Termite Action Group (TAG) which was started as a community based non profit organization. The original intentions of the group were completely honourable. As the technical advisor to the group, we explored the termite issue thoroughly, and came up with the reasons for the failures, and solutions. We worked with a number of home owners, and where their termite infestations were classified as premature failures resulting from initial building practices by the builder, or the builder's pest controller, we worked with them to get the builder and the pest controller to repair the damage, and reinstate the termite barriers to an Australian Standard compliant state. The Building Service Authority were initially (and in many cases still) reticent (to say the very least!) in helping the home owners.

Sadly, it was revealed in a full page article in a Saturday Courier Mail by Hedley Thomas, that the Termite Action Group had splintered. Two of the members had reached the conclusion that the newer chemicals couldn't deal with some common building practices, and unfortunately one member disagreed. That article is still available by subscription through www.couriermail.news.com.au, and makes interesting reading.

Following the demise of the Termite Action Group, Mark went back to work. The consumer sentiments remain, along with what some could call paranoia about the diligence required to install an effective termite barrier. That "paranoia" has been justified so many times now!

These were the years that provided the experience in termite and fumigation issues today. For formal Qualifications please click here.
