Termites in the Home

If you've found termites in the home, then an Australian Standard compliant inspection of the home must be carried out. From that inspection, an appropriate termite management plan can be developed.

The first part of treatment is destruction of the termite nest, which can be up to 100 yards away. It could be in an old stump buried under the road, or in a living gum or mango tree! The chances of finding the nest itself are pretty slim and remote!

Where the termites are discovered in the home, providing they haven't been disturbed too heavily, they can be dusted using either arsenic trioxide or the new Bayer Intrigue IGR based dust. Arsenic has been safely used in termite nest destruction for many years, and can be applied safely in most cases. Each infestation is assessed on it's merits.

From here, options start to occur.

If your home is within Queensland, it is important to know if your home has been built within the last 6 years and 3 months. If your home has been built during this period, then if the termites have occurred from an area in which you have not contributed to the termite infestation, the termite infestation may be the responsibility of your builder. If your builder has ceased trading, and it is determined that the termites have occurred from an area outside your influence, the Building Services Authority (BSA) insurance may be activated to assist in the repairs and termite barrier reinstatement. If your home has been built prior to this, then treatment and prevention is a cost borne by the home owner.
